Can dogs eat dill pickles? That sounds like a gross combination to me, but what if you could instead serve up a delightful, crunchy, sweet pickle with a dab of homemade dill butter, or butter dill spread? If you find yourself in need of something like that, make this pickle butter.
The beauty of the butter is that it’s all about simplicity. To create your own dill butter, you need five basic ingredients.
The process is super easy. You’ll boil the pickles, puree them, and stir in the butter ingredients until the butter is creamy. And then you’ll store the butter in the fridge.
This dill pickle butter tastes great on crackers, bagels, or even spooned on top of a bag of cooked rice. I made mine with sweet dill pickles, but if you have a good supply of pickles of any kind, feel free to use them.
You can keep this dill pickle butter in the fridge for up to three months.
There’s a bit of a gap between what goes in the freezer and what I think of as “real” butter. Sometimes I’ll whip up some butter from cream, milk, or ghee that will be great for spreading on toast. And sometimes I’ll throw in some herbs or spices for added flavor. But as far as the base, it’s always a combination of vegetable oil, cream, or ghee.
While it’s true that this homemade butter tastes a bit different, it doesn’t necessarily taste different than store-bought butter.
You don’t need a fancy mixer to make homemade butter. The only thing you’ll need is a stand mixer.
And I haven’t tried this homemade butter on bread yet, but I’ll be sure to let you know how it tastes on a baguette.
But even if you don’t want to commit to using a stand mixer to make butter, this homemade butter is easy to make and much less expensive than store-bought butter. Plus, it lasts way longer.
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter (or ghee)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup chopped pickles
1 tablespoon chopped dill
pinch of salt
Place the cream, milk, butter, oil, pickles, dill, and salt in a microwave-safe contner.
Heat on high in the microwave for about 2 minutes, until the butter melts.
Let it sit in the microwave for 1 minute to allow any small clumps to melt.
Use a spatula or spoon to mix until combined.
Let it sit until it solidifies. This can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your microwave and how hot your kitchen is.
Then it’s time to enjoy it!
Can you use this butter as a spread? Yes. It will melt a little in the microwave, so you can use it as a butter substitute, much like you would use ghee. However, homemade butter is actually much healthier for you than store-bought butter, because it doesn’t have any hydrogenated oils, GMOs, or high amounts of salt. I don’t really understand why a lot of restaurants serve butter that’s so high in salt, but it’s hard to fight the American fast food culture.
So, when you’re in the mood for a tasty treat, you can make this homemade butter at home. Just be careful, because once it melts, it’s like a hot mess and you’ll have to stir it!

Thanks for the info on the store bought butter! I did find it a little disappointing when I went to buy my butter this time. They had tons of varieties and it’s hard to find the good stuff.
I don’t use homemade butter much. I’ve been using store bought with the kids because I couldn’t find a good substitute. And that’s a challenge for me, because I’ve been eating a diet free of sugar since the kids were little, and now that they are starting to eat solids, they are starting to crave something that isn’t so sweet.
