Why does my dog keep licking his nose when he is outside?

Question

Why does my dog keep licking his nose when he is outside?

I know it is a sign of being happy to me but he is only 2yrs old so does it signify anything wrong with him?

This is our first dog. He is a 2 yr. old Dogue de Bordeaux. He seems to be healthy and I've never seen anything wrong with him. He is always outside and when he gets outside, he licks his nose. He's just never been good with this behavior. It's not a cold or anything like that.

My dog keeps licking her nose for a lot of reasons.

Sometimes, she just feels she needs to. I think it is because she is a Dogue de Bordeaux. She is very loyal and will often lick the person who feeds her.

Sometimes, she is happy and wants to share her happiness.

Other times, she may be sick and feels like she needs to lick her nose to get rid of the bad taste.

She also may be just playing and trying to be cute.

It can be a bit annoying, but it is normal for a dog, just do the best you can to keep her calm and happy. If she licks the dog that feeds her, tell her "NO" when she tries to. She will eventually stop.

If she is sick, try to take her outside and take her for a quick walk, she will most likely want to go back outside, and that is the time when she wants to lick her nose.

I have seen this behaviour in many dogs, but the reason I ask is because it seems unusual to see it in an otherwise healthy, young dog. This may be due to one of these reasons:

- It is simply a very unusual trt.

- He is not feeling well.

- He wants to have some peace and quiet, and does not like to be disturbed.

If you are worried about the health, he should be taken to a vet, even if he has not been ill. Even if he is perfectly healthy, a vet can help rule out any problems.

If you feel that this behaviour may be normal, it will depend on the dog and the situation. It might be something that can be addressed with positive trning. I would suggest starting with treats that he likes, and then gradually increasing the amount of time he is allowed outside, and adding treats. As he becomes accustomed to being outside longer and longer, and learning to trust you more and more, he will start to feel more comfortable and less likely to start licking his nose.

It is very likely it is just one of the above. You are correct that it is normal for a dog to lick his nose - it is his way of getting the inside of his nose clean for the sake of his sense of smell, and probably also because it feels good to him. Dogs don't lick their noses often, but when they do it's usually because they are happy, not because they are ill. A lot of the time, a dog will lick his nose just because he wants to. This is most likely what your dog is doing.

My dog licks her nose because she is a Dogue de Bordeaux. It is just her way of showing affection.

She will do it if she wants attention. Sometimes she will do it in the car, but she rarely will when you are driving.

She does it mostly when she feels happy.

She will lick her nose if she has a cold. It is her way of helping her to get rid of that bad taste in her mouth.

My dog licks his nose if he has eaten something he really doesn't like.

She will also lick her nose if it is cold outside.

My dog licks his nose if he feels sick.

He has to lick his nose every once in awhile when he is outside because he loves to be outside. He loves to run and play.

He licks his nose because he is a Dogue de Bordeaux breed and it is his natural behavior. He is not ill.

It's normal, and doesn't mean he's ill. It's just his way of being happy.

Licking the nose is common for Dogue de Bordeaux dogs. It is just a way to enjoy a peaceful and quiet moment outside. It is not at all related to illness.
