Around ten percent of the German population suffer from an animal hair allergy. This usually only develops in the course of life when people come into increased contact with animals. This is especially annoying when it turns out that someone is allergic to their own pet. But the beloved animal doesn't have to move out. You can alleviate the symptoms of your allergy with a few simple measures.

An animal hair allergy manifests itself in various overreactions of the body. Those affected sneeze, the eyes water and the skin begins to itch - a real tragedy for loving pet owners. However, if you follow the tips below, it is possible to relieve the symptoms of the allergy.

1. Hard floor instead of carpet

Hygiene is the be-all and end-all of an animal hair allergy. The harder it is for the animal hair to attach to fibers and furnishings, the better you will get along. Therefore, when choosing the floor, always choose laminate or floorboards that you can vacuum quickly and wipe with a damp cloth. Carpet is rather counterproductive.

2. Intensive animal care

But not only the floors should be cleaned regularly. Clean the litter box or cage litter of faeces and urine daily - this will prevent the allergens contained in them from drying and spreading in the air. Brush your cat or dog outdoors every day to keep as much hair as possible from your home.

3. Air regularly

Winter time is particularly stressful for people with animal hair allergies. The heating air dries the saliva that remains on the pet's fur during cleaning, which increases the amount of proteins in the air that trigger the symptoms of animal hair allergy. The same applies to the urine from the litter box or in the cage litter. That is why it is particularly important in winter to ventilate regularly and, if necessary, use room air filters that also raise the air humidity.

4. Set up animal-free zones

Dog, cat or small animals have no business in the bedroom if they have an allergy to animal hair. This way you can set up rooms in your own four walls where you are not exposed to the allergens - so you can really relax without having to sneeze all the time.

5. Medicines and hyposensitization

Mild symptoms of an animal hair allergy can be alleviated with medications, so-called antihistamines. They are available in tablet form, but also as nasal sprays and eye drops. If the symptoms become too massive, but you still do not want to give away your beloved pet, then it is one way to get your own immune system used to hyposensitization to animal hair. The doctor injects the patient with increasing minimum doses of the allergen over a period of three years. With a little luck, the symptoms can be alleviated until the patient stops responding and can cuddle with his four-legged friend undisturbed.
